Dermatologist Dr. Sandra Lee, better known as Dr. Acne Popper, has attracted over three million YouTube subscribers with her acne treatment videos. One of his latest videos, posted on Monday, showed a columnar cyst on a woman’s head.
Thanks to Li’s surgical skills and a small amount of anesthesia, the removal is quick and satisfying. At around 1:48, the cyst weakens the outflow of dirt; At 2:30, Lee teases it all as a single sleek light bulb.
During the procedure, Lee had an interesting conversation with a patient who spoke about a previous attempt to remove a cyst at home. The woman squeezed the cyst, then said that after a few days she noticed that a “prickly thing” was coming out of it – the growth had not completely emptied.
This anecdote is a reminder that cysts on their own are often useless and dangerous.
According to DermNet NZ, an educational website for the New Zealand Association of Dermatologists, pilar cysts are common benign tumors of the scalp. These cysts are skin sacs filled with keratin, the protein that makes up hair and nails, and become thick and sharp when the cyst is squeezed.
